How to Find an Online Job Doing Data Entry

There are lots of career paths to choose when pursuing an online career. Some make more money than others, and some jobs are more guaranteed than others, especially in today's economy. A dependable job that is still big online and still pays well is data entry. This article explains what data entry is and how to effectively begin your search for it online.

What Is Data Entry?

Data entry is fairly simple. It's the process of literally entering data into a form or report. Any major company needs at least one person to do this, but lots of companies need several people. Data entry is used, for example, in telemarketing. After a telemarketer makes a sale, the phone conversation is turned over to a representative who then takes down the person's information such as name, address, telephone number and which packet they're buying. This is just one example of a company that needs people. Other examples include department stores that need inventory by a list of items in stock, the item numbers, the price, and possibly which department the item is stored in. Any record that a company needs to keep track of is known as data entry.

Online Data Entry

Online data entry is not as simple as data entry done at the location of the business, but it's still possible. Someone will probably send you a big jumbled list of information and it will be your job to organize the information so that it is easily readable and presentable. Some companies require a special software or program do to their specific jobs, but other companies use regular programs such as Microsoft Excel and Database. Something such as these programs and the Internet (for purposes of email) and a pay site (sometimes these are used, but sometimes a company sends a check) will be used for the data entry process.

Finding Online Data Entry Jobs

Pretty much any large job site will have clerical and data entry jobs available. You can request to get emails of these certain jobs online and you'll receive information whenever a job like this pops up. From there it will be your responsibility to contact the employer, send your resume, and figure out the status of the job listing. There are data entry and clerical jobs all over the Internet. Lots of them are work-at-home, too! Some of the job sites will let you know right up front if you can do the job from home, but others won't. Contact the employer for that information.

Warning

Lots of these types of jobs are easy ways for scammers to get onto the Internet. Sometimes you'll send your resume to a job and you'll get an email back explaining a completely different job, or you'll be asked to pay a certain amount of money or sign up on a certain site. These letters are almost never legitimate, and if this happens to you, don't look into it any further. It's fake and it won't get you anywhere. Keep searching other positions for data entry until you find a real one that's right for you.

I tend to think that while there are a lot of different kinds of tricks in any market (bartending schools included, for instance) that doesn't mean the actual jobs don't exist. For instance, the freelance writing market has been fairly active on sites like Elance, Scriptlance. Freelance job auction sites are still great places to find work, but for the uninitiated, they can be competitive. Get what at what you do, and the jobs are out there, no matter what.

I've tried data entry jobs before and it's a cool way to earn money. I was paid through paypal. The job is easy but takes a lot of time to complete. But data entry is still a fun job. You don't need a diploma to apply for data entry jobs. You just need skills like encoding, researching, MS OpenOffice, etc. It's a decent way to earn extra cash.
